Fans were utterly flabbergasted when Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was confirmed for Season 2 at Anime Expo 2025. Who’d have thought? Despite David Martinez’s confirmed demise, the new season stands independent with a fresh narrative, intertwining redemption and revenge. Helmed by Kai Ikarashi, and penned by Bartosz Sztybor, this standalone promises a venture of visual splendor and chaos. The animation from Studio Trigger will intrigue with its grit and shadow. Curious about what’s next in this cyberpunk universe?

Who would have guessed that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners would get a second season, especially after all the chaos of Night City? Yet, here we are, with an official announcement at Anime Expo 2025 in Los Angeles. Fans might have thought the cyberpunk saga wrapped up with David Martinez’s story, but CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger are back with a whole new standalone adventure.

This time, the sequel promises a fresh narrative with a completely new cast, set to premiere exclusively on Netflix. Season 2, consisting of 10 episodes, doesn’t continue the previous storyline. Instead, it explores darker themes like redemption and revenge, examining the extremes needed to make one’s story matter in a spectacle-blinded world. Sounds intense, right?

The narrative will depict life amid the ongoing conflict between corporations and gangs. If the first season was a rollercoaster, this one sounds like a ride through a cyberpunk haunted house. The news of Season 2 has sparked anticipation among fans, especially since it was confirmed that David Martinez will not be returning, as his character is confirmed to be dead.

Kai Ikarashi, known for directing the standout Episode 6, “Girl on Fire,” takes the helm as director. Bartosz Sztybor returns as head writer, ensuring the series’ quality narrative continuity. With Studio Trigger once again crafting the animation, fans can expect the same vibrant yet perilous look of Night City, though with heavier shadows. The announcement was made during a panel hosted by YouTuber Joey Bizinger, also known as The Anime Man, who shared insights into the upcoming season.

The first poster certainly suggests a grittier, more mature aesthetic, featuring silhouetted characters, including a child—because nothing says dystopian future quite like kids in danger.

Netflix’s marketing highlights the raw, emotional depth conveyed through the visuals of this new season. The serialized format allows for an in-depth exploration of complex character arcs, mirroring the first season’s pacing and storytelling style.

Although the release date remains under wraps, the series is in production, with updates trickling in from CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger.

Interestingly, the second season’s announcement coincides with ongoing updates to the Cyberpunk 2077 game, as if to remind fans there’s more chaos where that came from.
